About This Site

Dog Camping Gear Hub covers the gear that makes a campsite work for a dog: tie-out cables that keep a wandering nose close, collapsible bowls for water on the trail, waterproof outdoor beds for cold ground, life jackets for lake days and saddlebag packs for hikes. Every piece is written from real trips, with the good parts and the annoying parts both left in.

Camping Safety for Dogs

Nothing on this site replaces your own judgment or your veterinarian's advice. A tie-out cable is for supervised time at camp only. Never leave a dog tied out unattended, near a fire ring, near a road, or anywhere the cable can wrap around a tree, a tent line or the dog's legs, and never attach a tie-out to a choke or prong collar.

Heat is the biggest risk on summer trips. Dogs overheat faster than people, so give shade, rest and fresh water often, and never leave a dog in a parked vehicle or a closed truck topper in warm weather. Cold ground and wet nights matter too: older and short-coated dogs need insulation under them and a dry place to sleep.

A dog life jacket helps a dog float, it does not make a dog water-safe. Always supervise a dog around water, watch for currents and blue-green algae, and check the fit before every trip. A loaded dog pack should stay at a modest share of the dog's body weight; ask your vet before a dog that is young, old or has joint problems carries anything.

Check campground leash rules, keep vaccinations and flea and tick prevention current, and carry your vet's number and the nearest emergency animal hospital before you head out.
